Through the Darkness

March 28, 2017

In life there are times where fears can be like wild animals.  They grab and gnaw at our beings until we are doing whatever we can to escape that fear.  I can remember when my children used to be afraid of the dark.  Honestly it wasn't that long ago.  I would be laying in bed, and hear "Daddy, I'm scared, can I have the night light on?"  Getting out of bed I would make my way into the room and plug in the night light.  After a while of doing this, I realized that my children were not getting much rest at night.  You see, although their fear was gone, it really wasn't solving the problem.  They needed quality rest.  A rest like this they could not get with the night light on.  So finally I began to share with them the importance of melatonin, and how if you don't have a lot of darkness your body won't build a lot of it.

In the same way, it seems that there have been times where I have gone through periods of anxiety and fears for different reasons.  In those times I find myself, like my children, wanting God to act in the same way that He has always acted to calm my anxieties and my fears.  Yet, He would rather me rely firmly on His Holy Word, rather than external signs.

Notice what the Bible says in Psalms 119:50: "This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me."

God wants us to take comfort from His Word, during our times of distress.

Take for example the time when Jesus was with the disciples on the lake and the storm came up.  Was Jesus afraid?  No.  In fact, He was sleeping. Surely we need to have the same trust in our Heavenly Father, and our Saviour.  During the times of our darkest afflictions, we must hold onto the only true and stable foundation: The Word of God.  Then we too can rest in His Word!

Let us put His Word in our hearts today.  Let us say with David:

"This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me."  Psalms 119:150
