Uncertainty and Where to Find Certainty

Have you seen the news reports lately? It seems that the main topic is earthquakes. First an earthquake in Japan, and then just a few short days later, another in Ecuador. Then there's all the flooding that is taking place around Houston this week, it seems it doesn't stop. Is there any certainty to be found in life? Friends, fortunately, there is certainty, and that certainty can be found in the Word of God for your life and mine. Listen to the words of David on Psalms 46: 1

1 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth.} God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Notice that God is present in trouble. He is present in your trouble and my trouble, he is present with those who are heartbroken, and those who are in the struggle to find loved ones in the rubble of those earthquakes. He is present with you when your job seems uncertain. Let's continue on with the passage. David now takes his paintbrush and gives a picture of what "trouble" might actually look like and says:

2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

At this point in Scripture we see a very dark scene before us. Mountains being carried into the midst of the sea. Those titanic sized monuments to strength and stability, being picked up and moved to the sea. This sounds a lot like a massive earthquake to me. Then he goes on to talk about the waters roaring, and the mountains being battered by the swelling. Maybe you have felt this way in your own life. It just doesn't seem to quite, and you wonder when you are ever going to get a break from it all. Everything just seems to be falling apart at the seams around you. What is the solution to this delima?

Let's see what David does. In his writing, he immediately shifts his perspective to the one certain thing he knows. In verse 4 we read:

4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

5. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

Immediately, as I read, I can see the incredible contrast, of certainty and uncertainty. From roaring waters, to streams that make the city of God glad. David's imagination seems to be moving towoards the importance of where God is.

Can you picture it friends? Everything down here on earth is going crazy, but God is not worried or wringing His hands saying nervously "What should I do? What should I do?" No, He's in Heaven, on His throne and in charge of the current events in today's world. Do you know what is even more incredible than this? That the King of the Universe, Jesus Christ, cares about the things going on in your life personally, and that you can approach His throne at any time. Go to that city, by faith in prayer, and meet before Jesus. Tell Him what you are going through, and trust Him, believe that He loves you, because He does!

Remember these Words from Hebrews 4:16, for they are written for us in these troubled times:

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
